 | | Manchester Telecoms Heritage |
| Hi
For those with an interest in local telecoms heritage, Nigel Linge, Professor Emeritus of The University of Salford is running a local heritage project as follows.
If interested please follow the weblink below to contact Nigel directly.
Thanks
Andy Simmons
-------
The weblink for Nigel's project is: www.manchestertelecomheritage.com/projects.php
Background
In essence, Nigel is trying to map the usage by telecommunications companies of buildings within central Manchester and its border with Salford. His focus is within living memory and so his plan is to informally interview people who worked for a telecoms company in Manchester. That is any company and any role, not just BT and not just engineers. Buildings are re-purposed or demolished, companies come and go, records can be lost, and consequently, important heritage becomes eroded, but knowledge remains locked in the minds and memories of those who worked there. So, for any given building, Nigel would like to better understand what function it served, how it was organised internally, and what were the experiences of those who worked within it.
His longer term, 12-18 month plan, is to write a book that records Manchester’s telecommunications heritage.
By following the above weblink, people can log an interest in the project by completing an online form. That sends an alert through to Nigel which prompts him to contact people directly and discuss how they might be able to arrange an informal interview. |

 | | Piper Alpha Disaster Anniversary |
| I saw this post from, Ian, this week on the Telecoms Heritage Group forum and have copied the post here - with permission. I was unaware of this until I saw this post. Thanks Ian.
Martin
Gents,
On the night of 6th July 1988 Piper Alpha exploded and sank, killing 165 men onboard. What's the relavance to this group I hear you say? What has rarely ever gets a mention, three of those who died were BT employees. Graham Gill Whyte 42, James Gilbert Whyte 53, both Aerial Riggers, and Alistair Adam Thompson 45, Telecomms Engineer, were onboard on that fateful night. They were out there performing maintenace on Piper's Trans Horizon Radio System, or Tropo Scatter, for short. Please bear them a thought, along with the other 162 souls as we mark the 35th aniversary of that disaster. |
