| | We were informed by Mikes family on the 15th of Feb of his passing .Mike worked at GPO//BT from the 60's until his early retirement in 91. Most of Mikes working life was in accounts at Telephone House & Church St M//C.
Mike loved his cricket & played regularly for the works teams.
After his retirement he moved back to his home town of Withernsea where he was a regular 'bones' player.
His funeral will be on Wed 06 march 2019 at 13.30 at St Mathews church Withernsea North Humberside . |

| | Ron Dawson contacted us with this sad news.
Sadly I have to inform people that “Big Steve Payne” passed away in hospital on Sunday evening, 10th of Feb. after a short illness.
He was 67 years old. Steve spent most of his career in Dalton trunk exchange before moving on to trunk test, TVNSC, and finally the outside broadcast group.
He was a very sociable, larger than life character who loved his football, representing MANCASS and playing for his home town team, Atherton Coll’s.
He will be greatly missed by his many friends.

 | | Dave Crowley is tunnelling out..... |
| |  After taking inspiration from Charles Bronsons’ great tunnelling skills in the classic war film 'The Great Escape', I feel that after almost 40 years of tunnelling, I am clear enough beyond the barbed wire BT fence to tunnel to the surface, glance over my shoulder at those who remain, avoid the searchlights , and Bloody leg it into early retirement!!
I’m 56 in the summer and thinking I’ll hopefully be able to do more of my active hobbies in my late fifties than in my 60’s ,so I’m off. There's too many roads to cycle, trails and mountains to hike, waterways to kayak, countries to still visit, the 'to do list' keeps growing . I can't see myself watching 'Jeremy Kyle finds some cash in the attic and buys a home that's been hiding under a hammer', whatever the hell that's about. If I do have any spare time in the winter, I'd like to do some voluntary work as well.
I’ve met, worked and drank with some great people over the last 40 years. The old days of working with colleagues as a team every day were really great times, but as we all know, the business has changed a lot and is mainly individual working now and the days of being part of a big staff of workmates day in//day out are long gone. Shame really. I’ve been lucky though, that I’ve never had to work in an office at all in my time and always refused any acting duties etc. Jeez, the thought of managing people + stats + charts. Don’t go there.
There doesn’t seem to be many leaving Do’s now either, but I’m having a Do at the Dog+Partridge, Great Moor, Stockport SK2 7AN on Friday 15 March. Its 2 minutes walk from Woodsmoor train station and on the main 192 bus route from Manchester, so access is pretty good to sink a few. (and a few more.....) hic! I’ll be putting a buffet on as well, so if you could e mail - bell me - txt me on dave.crowley1@btinternet.com or 07885417013 if you can make it,that’d be great as I’d hate to cater for 3 people, then if 4 showed up it could be embarrassing.
I’ll be in there about 4ish, with the butties on about 7ish. I've met loads of people around the north west since 1979, so it would be great to sink some ale with anyone who can make it and talk utter nonsense as i have been doing for years.
Adios and hope to bump into people around the area before I leg it on Feb 28th..... Or on the 15 March in the Dog!!!!!!!

| |  Alan Farrell contacted us with the news of Doug's death. Doug was 75 according to information on his website profile.
Just to let you know that Doug Edwards passed away on the 3rd of Feb, after a short illness.

| | John Coop has been in touch about the death of Graham 'Dinger' Bell.
Sad news I’m afraid. Graham passed away on Saturday 19th January. He had been suffering from dementia for 2 to 3 years and had further complications resulting in his death.
Graham worked on Trunk Test in Dial House for several years before transferring to the Training School at Didsbury. When the school closed he went back to Dial House until his retirement.
Please circulate details for those who knew him.

As part of the Greater Manchester Archaeology Festival 2019, which is held in conjunction with the Greater Manchester Archaeology Federation, we are pleased to offer this one day, free, Telecommunications Heritage Conference. Held in association with the University of Salford’s Centre for Applied Archaeology and Connected Earth and supported by the Institute of Telecommunications Professionals, this conference will explore the history of telecommunications and its impact on society and the development of industrial cities such as Manchester.
If you would like to offer a contribution to this conference, please check out the website link below. Presentation slots are 25 minutes with an additional 5 minutes for questions and discussion.
Contributions are welcome on a broad range of telecommunications topics and whilst a Manchester link is especially welcomed, this is not an essential requirement.
Equally, if you would rather not deliver a presentation, we do welcome other forms of contribution which could, for example, include bringing along old photographs, ephemera or relevant artefacts for people to see.
If you are a former employee of a telecommunications company and worked within Greater Manchester, then we would be particularly interested in your recollections and memories of that time and the places where you worked.

| | John Ogden contacted us about the passing of his brother Steve Ogden.
Unfortunately, after a prolonged illness, Steve Ogden passed away over the Christmas holiday.
Steve started as a TTA on EL&P in 1969, he then has spells on Exchange Construction and Maintenance, in Manchester North and South areas.
He subsequently moved to the BT training college at Stone for several years, before moving to America for 15 years with BT-Concert.
He returned to the UK a few years ago.
The family requests a private funeral, with family members only.

| | I have now been informed by Harold Garners daughter Karen of the details of His funeral. It will be held on Friday 11th January at 1100 in St.Georges Church Heavily SK2 6NX. Followed by a cremation at the Cypress Chapel at Stockport Cemetery Dave Mills. |

| | The Passing of Harold S. Garner. |
| | It is with sadness that I have to inform you all of the death of Harold in Abney Court Care Home after a short illness on 16/12/2018 Harold who joined the GPO as a Y2Yc, He worked in the Auto exchange field being on the area pool before running Woodley Telephone exchange for some years. Eventually he moved to the Transmission side where he worked at Manchester G before being promoted. He eventually went on to work at the RNCC before retiring from there.I will post details of his funeral when they are known.David J Mills. |

I'm really sorry to have to tell you this sad news but Howard Nixon died last night (05//12//2018)
Howard worked in many places including Blackfriars & Collyhurst Exchs, and then on various jobs in Dial House.
Don't know too many details other than he had a Heart Attack at Salford Quays Station after the Utd v Arsenal game last night.
I will let you know any news as I get it. |
